Archival Paper for Gold Toned Portfolio Sadly Discontinued

The Gold Toned Portfolio of Byron Harmon images is printed on gold toned, Centennial Gelatine Chloride Printing-Out-Paper and has been the mainstay of the work I have done with the Byron Harmon Collection since 1994. This paper has long been obsolete in the broader photographic market but was kept alive by Chicago Albumen Works, an American company who specializes in vintage photographic processes. The paper was commissioned by them, first in France and then in England, and I was one of the photographers who tested each new rendition of the paper. Alas, Kentmere Paper in England, the last company to tackle the difficult production of this paper, was sold in 2009 and the new owners have declined to continue it’s production. Therefore I will no longer be producing the Limited or Open Editions of prints using this paper. We have in stock in Banff varying numbers of each image. I was printing the portfolios on demand so many editions will be capped at much less than the stated 100 prints per image. Please contact Harmon Gallery for availability and edition size.

Many, But Not All Gold Toned Editioned Images Still Available

The portfolio consists of images which I selected for their pictorial appeal and historical interest. Printing-Out-Paper is a contact printing paper which means the images produced are at the size of the original negative. In order to protect the delicate original negatives, enlarged printing negatives were prepared from the originals by Chicago Albumen Works. The printing negatives are contact printed on 16” x 20” Centennial Gelatine Chloride Printing-Out-Paper, a vintage paper which is contemporary with the photographs themselves. This archival paper is suited for faithful rendering of the long tonal ranges typical of negatives of this period. Printing-Out-Paper is gold toned. This provides interesting tonal ranges from deep brown to black with silvery highlights and produces a print with excellent archival characteristics. The prints are prepared to the strictest archival standards including matting and framing.

I am proud to present new portfolios of digital restorations of photographs from the entire Harmon family Collection elsewhere on this website. These prints are also prepared using archival materials and standards and I believe them to be a beautiful new contribution to the medium of photography. As the Gold Toned Series sells out, the images will be re-introduced as archival pigment prints.
